Cables for Hazardous Locations
What cable gland do I use?

This is often a very confusing issue.  Below is a cable by cable list with the glands you should use depending on what cable you chose and it's application.  Be sure to read the application information and then scroll down to the cable you are planning to use.

We start with IEC cables.  The below information should only be applied to IEC cables for use in IEC or ATEX applications.

When terminating to increased safety enclosures, type "e" protection must be maintained but compound filled glands are not required.  We quite often use a gland that is dual rated Ex de (flameproof and increased safety).

When terminating to a flameproof enclosure and the cable does not meet EN60079-14 b) of 10.4.2 a compound gland must be used.  If the cable does meet EN60079-14, 10.4.2 then the "Selection Chart Figure 1" must be used.

BS6883 Instrumentation (all screening options), Power and Control Cables terminating to Increased Safety Enclosures.
When terminating to an Increased Safety enclosure the cable gland shall maintain a minimum protection type "e" and should maintain the IP rating of the enclosure.  When using non-braided cable use a Hawke 501/421 series cable gland.  When using a braided cable use a Hawke 501/453 cable gland.

BS6883 Instrumentation (all screening options), Power and Control Cables terminating to Flameproof Enclosures.
These cables comply with EN60079-14, b) of 10.4.2.  When terminating to a Flameproof enclosure use EN60079-14 the (Selection Chart Figure 1) - Selection chart for cable entry devices into flameproof enclosure to determine if compound filled glands are required.  If compound glands are not required use a Hawke 501/421 for non-braided cables or the Hawke 501/453 for braided cables.  If compound glands are required use the Hawke ICG/623 glands for cables without a braid and ICG/653 glands if they have a braid.

BS7917 Instrumentation Cables (all screening options) when terminating to Increased Safety Enclosures.

BS7917 Instrumentation Cables (all screening options) when terminating to Flameproof Enclosures.
These cables comply with EN60079-14, b) of 10.4.2.  When terminating to a Flameproof enclosure use EN60079-14 the (Selection Chart Figure 1) selection chart for cable entry devices into flameproof enclosure to determine if compound filled glands are required.  If compound glands are not required use a Hawke 501/421 for non-braided cables or the Hawke 501/453 for braided cables.  If compound glands are required use the Hawke ICG/623 glands for cables without a braid and ICG/653 glands if they have a braid.

NEK 606
RFOU (i) and BFOU (i) Instrumentation Cables terminating to Increased Safety Enclosures.

The following information is for use with cables in hazardous locations in North America

Unlike IEC cables, cable for use in North America are defined in the NEC Article 501, and CSA and must be third party certified for use in Division I areas.  Cables for use in Division 2 areas are defined but not necessarily certified for hazardous areas.

Instrumentation Cables

Type MC-HL instrumentation cables can be used in Division 1 or 2 areas.  When terminating into general purpose enclosures in Division 2 areas it is not required to use a compound filled gland.  The cable gland can be be rated general purpose but should maintain the NEMA rating of the enclosure.  Use the Hawke type 701 series.  When terminating to an AEx Increased Safety enclosure, type "e" protection should be maintained and the IP rating of the enclosure should be maintained.  When terminating to an explosionproof enclosure a third party certified Class I, Division 1 compound filed gland should be used.  Use a Hawke type 711 cable gland.

Type ITC-HL instrumentation cables can be used in Division 1 or 2 areas.

Type PLTC and ITC instrument cables are for use in Division 2 areas.  When terminating into general purpose enclosures in Division 2 areas it is not required to use a compound filled gland.  The cable gland can be be rated general purpose but should maintain the NEMA rating of the enclosure.  Use the Hawke type 701 series.
When terminating to an explosionproof enclosure a UL Listed compound gland must be used.  Use the Hawke type 711 series.
